Description
A lantern whose walls look plain until you light it, and then show an image in shades of shadow.
A lithophane is a picture carved in thickness rather than ink: thin where the image should be bright, thick where it should be dark. Unlit, the panels read as textured white. Put an LED tealight or a small light kit inside and the image resolves out of nowhere. It is genuinely surprising the first time, and it stays good.
What makes it worth it
- Image appears only when lit — plain, sculptural object by day
- Sized for a standard LED tealight or a small USB light kit
- Warm light reads best; cool white sharpens the contrast
- Four panels, so there is something to see from every side
- Light enough to move from a table to a shelf on a whim
- Custom images are possible — send us a photo and ask
Made for
- Bedside tables, mantels and dining tables
- Gifts that need to mean something specific
- Memorial and anniversary pieces
- Anyone who likes an object with a reveal in it
Use an LED only. Lithophanes work by being thin, and a real flame or a hot bulb will distort the panels — an LED tealight gives the same flicker with none of the heat.
Printed to order in Canada
Every Compl3x piece is printed and finished by hand in our own Canadian workshop after you order it, so nothing sits in a warehouse and nothing is mass-produced. Colour options and custom sizing are a conversation, not a no — just ask.
Care
Use with an LED bulb or LED light kit only — LEDs run cool. Dust with a dry, soft brush or cloth. Do not fit an incandescent or halogen bulb.
