Bar soap has had a comeback and everybody has rediscovered the same problem: within a week the bar is a soft grey puddle. This is entirely a drainage problem and it is completely solvable.
What is actually happening
Soap dissolves in standing water. A flat dish traps the water that runs off the bar, the underside sits in it, and the bar softens from below. It is not the humidity and it is not the soap – it is the two millimetres of water underneath it.
What a dish needs to do
Two things. Lift the bar clear of any water, and let air reach the underside so it dries between uses. Ridges, slats or an open lattice do both. A self-draining design adds the third piece: somewhere for the water to go rather than pooling in a well.
The three designs, and where each belongs
Open lattice. Maximum airflow, water falls straight through. Best beside a sink where a few drops on the counter do not matter, or in a shower where it goes down the drain anyway. Dries a bar fastest of the three.
Ridged with a drip tray. The bar sits on ridges, water collects in a tray you empty occasionally. Best on a wooden vanity or any surface you do not want wet. Slightly slower drying, much tidier.
Sloped. The whole dish tilts so water runs off one edge – usually back into the sink. Neat and low-maintenance, provided it is positioned so the runoff goes somewhere sensible.
Why printed beats ceramic here
This is a category where printing genuinely wins. Complex lattices and internal drainage channels are free to produce, where the same shapes in ceramic would need moulds and would be fragile. Printed dishes also do not chip when they get knocked into a sink, and they do not absorb water the way unglazed ceramic does.
Cleaning
Soap scum builds up regardless of design. Warm water, a brush, and an occasional wipe with vinegar clears it. No dishwasher – the heat will deform it.
Shower-specific advice
In a shower, mount it or make sure it will not slide. And check drainage direction: a dish that drains toward the wall instead of the drain just moves the puddle. Browse the bathroom and household range.
