Dice Towers: What Actually Matters When You Buy One

A dice tower solves two problems at a table: dice that roll off the board and players who are suspicious of each other’s technique. Most towers solve both. What separates them is whether anyone keeps using it.

Baffles decide whether it actually randomises

Inside the tower, angled shelves bounce the dice on the way down. Too few and a die can drop almost straight through, keeping whatever face it went in on. Three or more staggered baffles is the practical minimum. If a listing does not show the inside, that is worth asking about.

Noise is the reason towers get abandoned

Hard plastic baffles plus hard dice equals a clatter that gets old by round three, particularly in an apartment. Thicker walls damp it considerably, and a felt or fabric lining in the catch tray kills most of the remaining noise. If you play late or near sleeping people, this matters more than looks.

The catch tray is not optional

A tower without a tray fires dice across the table, which is the exact problem you were solving. Look for a tray with a lip high enough to stop a bouncing d20 – low walls look elegant and fail in practice.

Footprint against table space

Tables are crowded. A tall tower with a wide tray eats real estate that character sheets and snacks want. Measure your usual setup honestly. This is where compact designs beat impressive ones.

Collapsible if it travels

If the tower goes to a game store or a friend’s house, a fixed one will stay home after two trips. Folding designs pack flat and assemble without tools. There is a small trade-off in rigidity, and for most groups it is worth it.

Printed towers have one real advantage

Complex internal geometry is free. Angled baffles, spiral drops, integrated trays and decorative exteriors cost nothing extra to produce, where a moulded tower would need several parts and an assembly step. That is why the interesting designs in this category are almost all printed.
