Most badly styled shelves fail the same way: everything is the same height, evenly spaced, and touching. It reads as storage rather than display. The fix takes about ten minutes and no additional purchases.

Work in groups of three

Odd numbers look deliberate and even numbers look symmetrical, which on a shelf reads as accidental. Three objects per group, with a clear gap before the next group. If you have six things, that is two groups, not one row of six.

Vary the height by a lot, not a little

The most common mistake is grouping objects that differ by two centimetres. The eye reads that as an error. Aim for a tall piece, a medium piece and something low and horizontal – a stack of books laid flat counts, and is the cheapest way to get a platform. A tall vase like the Strata Vase against a low trivet or wall piece gives you the contrast immediately.

Leave something empty

Negative space is what separates styled from crammed. Roughly a third of the shelf should have nothing on it. This is the hardest rule to follow because empty shelf feels like waste, and it is the one that makes the biggest difference.

Include one thing that does not match

A shelf where every object shares a palette and a material looks bought in one transaction, because it was. One object that breaks the scheme – an odd colour, a different material, something with obvious personal history – makes the rest look chosen rather than purchased. This is the single highest-impact trick in the list.

Think about what is behind it

A matte charcoal object disappears against a dark wall and a pale ceramic disappears against white. Before you buy, look at the wall colour behind the shelf and pick the opposite end of the scale. Light it, or accept it will be invisible after 5pm
