Indoors, out of direct sun, a printed piece will outlive most of the furniture around it. The failure modes are specific and almost entirely avoidable.

Heat is the main enemy

Standard PLA begins to soften somewhere around 55 to 60 degrees Celsius. That is far above room temperature and well below the inside of a parked car in July. The classic failure is a piece left on a dashboard or a sunny windowsill above a radiator, which sags over a few hours and never recovers. Keep it away from sustained heat and this simply does not happen.

UV is the slow one

Ultraviolet light breaks down polymer chains over months and years. The symptoms are fading first, then brittleness. Indoors, behind glass, this is negligible. Outdoors in full sun it matters a great deal, which is why anything meant to live outside should be printed in a UV-stable material like ASA rather than PLA. Cold is not a problem

This surprises people in Alberta and Manitoba every winter. Cold does not degrade these materials. It makes them slightly more brittle in the moment, so a piece dropped at minus twenty is more likely to crack than one dropped at room temperature – but a winter delivery does no harm at all.

Water, mostly fine

Printed plastics do not absorb water or rot. Standing water in contact with a printed surface for long periods can, over time, work into layer gaps on a conventionally printed piece, which is why we recommend a liner in vases. See our piece on that.

The realistic lifespan

For an indoor decorative or organisational piece kept out of direct sun: decades. There is no meaningful wear mechanism. For an outdoor piece in the right material: several years before noticeable fading, longer before anything fails structurally. For an outdoor piece in the wrong material: a single summer.

It can be reprinted, which is the quiet advantage of buying from the people who made it. There is no discontinued line and no “we no longer stock that” – the file still exists. Email us and we will sort it out.
